A 'kiss from the sunbeam' wins finalist position in HRD Awards

August 09, 2009

Viktoras Sitalo comes from Klaipeda in Lithuania and is an independent jewelry designer specializing in the design of jewellery set with diamonds and precious stones.

He has been working as a jewellery designer for the past 11 years, and has set himself an ambitious aim of developing an original jewellery style and to establish an international trademark of luxury goods.

After studying metalworking in his home country, he went on to complete a diploma in goldsmithing in Pforzheim, Germany, which is world-renown for its jewelry and watch-making industry. He later completed a B.A. at Vilnius Academy of Arts.

Along with two colleagues, Sitalo has a small shop in Klaipeda which is located on Lithuania's Baltic coast about 300 kilometres to the east of the capital of Vilnius. Although he enjoys working with larger diamonds, he says that for now most of his work features smaller stones of 0.005-1 carat, D-E colour and IF-VVS clarity.

He also likes to produce jewellery with yellow and champagne coloured diamonds. Working alone, he creates jewellery as requested by customers as well as making items based on his own creativity which he sells in the store.

Sitalo said that there are many influences on his jewellery designs. Some of his items are abstract while others are influenced by nature.

Sitalo, aged 35, was the fifth finalist in 2009 HRD Awards, which he entered for the first time. His entry for the competition was a ring called 'Kiss from the sunbeam' inspired by the fairy tale of Hans Christian Andersen called 'The conceited apple branch.'

The ring interprets the Andersen fairy tale. “See, she exclaimed, how wonderfully God has made this little flower. I will paint it with the apple branch together. Everyone admires the beauty of the apple bough, but this humble flower has been endowed by heaven with another kind of loveliness and although they differ in appearance, both are the children of realms of beauty. Then the sunbeam kissed the lowly flower and he kissed the blooming apple branch upon whose leaves appeared a rosy blush.”

The jewel, made of white and yellow gold, features 181 brilliant cut diamonds with a total weight of 5.43 carats. The diamonds were provided by Vets Alphi Diamond Manufacturing NV.
