Pious donor leaves donation of 162 diamonds at Indian temple

November 28, 2011

An anonymous donor left 162 diamonds worth around $230,000 in a donation box at the Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh. The donor is possibly from Mumbai, say temple sources.

The diamonds were placed in a box for devotees’ offerings, and were found when the box was opened to count collections. The receipt for purchase of the diamonds, also dropped in the box, bears the name of a jewellery store which has many outlets in Mumbai, according to a report in the Bangalore Mirror.

Sources at the temple said it is the biggest donation in the box in the last few decades. The diamonds and receipt are in the custody of the temple inventory. The diamonds will be displayed at a media event as it is the first time an offering of such value has been made by an unidentified donor.

Items of gold and silver as well as cash have often been received in the past, including a diamond-set crown weighing 2.5 kg two years ago by now-jailed former minister and mining company head.
